Fall family photo season is here! I’ve had my fair share of calm and chaotic photoshoots since having Bennett in 2014. Whether it’s the number of kids, their ages, the time of day, the outfit choice, location, you name it – so many variables can play into that precious time in front of the camera. Despite any best-laid plans, your kid(s) can always decide they’re just not into it…and at that point, you have to make the most of it and let your professional do their thing. Today I’m sharing some tips that have helped us capture some great pics with my favorite people! It definitely helps to have an experienced photographer who’s comfortable with kids, too. A huge thank you to our local gem, Julie Sassano Photography who has always been amazing and worked so well with our family; if you’re in the western burbs of Chicago, definitely check her out!
Location, Location, Location / The backdrop of your photos will set the scene! I’ve always preferred outdoor pics with all the natural light and fresh air and it keeps the little ones happy and lets them play/stay happy during the shoot. I love the candids we’ve gotten over the years of the boys running around, goofing off and giggling together…which is exactly the sort of stuff I want to be captured!
Feed the Animals / For evening photos especially (hello, golden hour), we try to time it where the little kids are just waking up from a nap, eating an early-ish dinner, then getting dressed and out the door; in that order! There is nothing worse than showing up with a cranky crew.
Timing is Everything / We’ve always done a 30-minute session; it’s just the right amount of time to get a good mix of scenery and group shots and wraps up jussssst when the kiddos start to lose interest and run out of steam. Again, we totally love candids and try not to make them work too hard but they only last so long! Keep it short and honestly, the time will fly by.
Be Neutral / I love the look of neutral outfits when there’s a gorgeous outdoor setting behind us. Whites, grays, tans, some muted colors, etc. look so great together and there are a million ways to wear clothes that complement (but don’t match!) each other nicely. Thinking about the finished product, I think the whole point (at least for me) is to print these family photos and display them around the house. Neutral tones give you some flexibility so they can look perfect in any room without being too loud or bright.
Stress Less / Don’t sweat the small stuff on the day of the shoot. Just get everyone dressed, on time, and have some fun! Of course, we all want those sweet, perfect photos but don’t try too hard to make it just right. Let loose and the pictures will capture everyone being themselves!
